Understanding the Memory Text
Lesson 9[Feb 21-27]: Understanding the Memory Text
"For He made Him who knew no sin
to be sin for us, that we
might become the righteousness
of God in Him." (2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV)
- This lesson is about reconciliation—how
we, who were once separated from God, are brought back
into a right relationship with Him through Christ.
- The memory text explains the great
exchange that took place at the cross.
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us…”
- Jesus lived a perfect life.
- He never sinned—not in thought,
word, or action.
- He was completely innocent.
- Yet on the cross, God treated Jesus as
if He had committed every sin ever committed by humanity.
- This does not mean Jesus became sinful.
It means our sin was placed upon Him.
- Our guilt, shame, punishment.
- He took responsibility for what we
had done.
- He stood in our place.
- He who was innocent was counted as sin for us—the guilty.
- This is substitution.
- Christ took what we deserved.
“…that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
- Just as our sin was placed on Christ, His righteousness is given
to us.
- When we put our faith in Jesus, God treats us as if we had lived Christ’s perfect life.
- His obedience becomes ours. His record becomes ours.
- We stand before God not in our own goodness, but clothed in Christ’s
righteousness.
- This is not something we earn. It is not a reward for good behavior.
- It is a gift of grace.
- We receive it by faith.
What this means for you
- You are fully accepted.
Not because you are good enough, but because Jesus took
your place.
- You can stop striving.
Your salvation does not depend on your performance.
It rests on what Christ has already done.
- You are called to live
differently. When you understand how much you have been loved
and forgiven, your life begins to reflect
His love to others.
This verse is the gospel in one sentence. Jesus took our sin upon Himself and gives us His righteousness in return. This is the good news that changes everything.
This lesson explains the great exchange at the cross—Christ took our sin and gives us His righteousness as a gift of grace through faith.
